Typhoon Damage
Abacus sustained a fair amount of damage from the two typhoons that hit last week. We had several broken branches hanging down and were unable to open the playground as a result last week. In addition two of the posts that hold the sails up over the sand pit and playhouse have been felled. There is also damage to the corrugated roof outside the girls toilets caused by falling branches. The maintenance people are coming to quote for repairs and clean up today, so hopefully all areas will be back in action very shortly. Safety is our primary concern therefore we carry out walk around checks whenever there has been a typhoon to look for potential hazards. We hope your homes fared well during the storms.
Mud Kitchen
We have decided to give the mud kitchen a facelift and have been working with a forest schools consultant to develop the area. They will be making the changes to the mud kitchen during the first week in September. Some of the ideas we hope to incorporate are moving water, a larger kitchen area and of course a space for mud digging. Below are some ideas for possible changes to the area. Staff will also attend Hong Kong forest adventures for training in November so that we can implement more of the forest schools ideas into our practice at Abacus.
ESF K1 and Year 1 Admissions
ESF Kindergarten applications will be open during the month of September this year in addition to ESF Year 1 admissions. The admissions process for ESF Year 1 has changed slightly this year. Please remember to apply on time, any time during the month of September. This year it will be one application for ESF schools and ESF Private Independent Schools such as Renaissance and Discovery College. You will also be given the option to choose an out of zone school if your school of zone cannot take you. It is important to accept this just in case your in zone school is full. The ESF Kindergarten children will be accommodated in an ESF school before any children not attending an ESF Kindergarten even if there isn’t room in their zoned school. So, for example if you fall in the Kowloon Junior School zone, which was heavily oversubscribed last year, and you check the box to accept an out of zone school, you may be offered a place at Clearwater Bay or Beacon Hill.
Please find the powerpoint from the admissions evening here.
K1 Meet the Teacher Evening
This Tuesday, 29th of August you will have the chance to come into school and meet your class teacher and hear about the year ahead. The timings are as follows:
K1 Meet the Teacher Evening
Tuesday 29th August
K1 AM Classes – 4.30pm in their own classrooms
K1 PM Classes – 5.15pm in their own classrooms
Library Helpers
Allison is looking for some volunteers to help out in the library. The jobs are mainly organising books, re categorising, labeling or covering them and pulling out damaged books for replacement. If you have even an hour a week to spare after drop off or before pick up please let Allison know by emailing allison.banbury@abacus.edu.hk
BBQ Fair Meeting
It is that time of year again where we begin preparing for the fair at Abacus. It would not be possible to run this event without some parent volunteers to help organise the event.
We are looking for volunteers to come along to our first meeting on September 4th at 8.45 am in the library please. At this meeting I will outline how the fair works for new parents and we will divide up some of the jobs that need doing prior to the day. If you are willing to help and be on the organising committee for this event please email kinder@abacus.edu.hk
We will also be looking for volunteers on the day and will send more information about this later.
